A Tokyo New Year

More on my trip to Kansai in the next post.

I had an amazing new years. I kind of just went with the flow and didn't have anything in particular planned. I went with some friends to Zojoji temple, near Tokyo Tower in Hamamatsucho, for the annual balloon releasing event held every new year. We arrived at about 7pm to collect our ticket to claim our balloon and waited in line for about an hour to get our wish card on which we could write whatever wishes we wanted to send up into the sky.

After that we indulged in a little fine dining - something we like to call マック. I snuck a Mos Burger in though because the craving could not be tamed. After we hit the コンビ二 en route back to the temple to get our balloons. We attached our wishes to the balloon and waited for some time in the crowd, intermittently gasping with the crowd at prematurely released balloons. Then the countdown began and a really special feeling came over me - nothing I had anticipated - and I really just enjoyed the experience.

Afterwards the crowd headed towards the shrine to say their prayers. Trapped in the mob we had to choice but to follow. I think we waited about an hour for our turn. It was more crowded than the Saikyo line at 8:30am so it meant you could fall down even if you wanted to, and that it wasn't cold because of the mass spooning.

Afterwards we had fish and chips at an English pub, hit the Pokemon centre because it happened to be close by, then played on the swing set across the road. Got tired, went home, and THEN, walking into the lobby of my dorm I ran into some other friends who were going to the Rainbow Bridge to watch the sunrise. So instead of the bed that I was looking forward to, I was yet again walking to the train station. It was well worth it though.

Got back, hit the コンビニ, saw a pineapple for 105 yen, bought it, then made pancakes with a friend. Collapsed in bed. Woke up at 6pm.

Yeah it was pretty special.
