So I finally paid the 4 months of rent I had to send in advance - only because I had to. The payment needed to get there by the 19th, and I only found out yesterday that it actually takes up to 48 hours for the telegraphic transfer to get processed so I hurried off to the bank.
Unfortunately for me, in the two weeks I had waited since receiving payment instructions, the yen decreased by about 3 to the NZD, as opposed to going 3 the other way. So that's about $200-$300 down the drain. Hopefully it jumps back up before I leave though.
Graph above shows that I changed my money at the worst* possible time.
Lesson: currency trading is like roulette, except it takes weeks to find out if you've lost or won.
On the good side though, all I have to do now is wait for September the 15th. I'm pretty excited now that everything is set to go!
