A large bet

A few changes to the blog since the last post - modified layout and new blog name! The old one was too long and not very slick. The name Jochi (上智) is the Japanese name for Sophia University. I'm not quite sure why the Anglicized version of the university name is so different, but it is. The word jochi means "supreme wisdom".

I am currently still waiting to hear back from the university as to whether or not I'm officially in the program. If their word is anything to go by, I should expect to hear from them by the end of this month ("up to two months after the application closing date"). That's a long time, especially when flights generally get more expensive as the cheaper fares get sold over time - speaking of which - I bought my tickets to Japan!

Having kept track of flight prices almost everyday for the past month, I decided to go for the sale that Qantas were offering - $1500 return. Not the cheapest price that I would expect to see them at. (I know that I could possibly get them at around $1200-$1300). But the thing with airfares, is that you don't know when, or if ever, those prices will come up with the right fare conditions that suit you. So I'm taking a bet, and now hoping that cheaper flights aren't available for my sake.

I'm also taking a bet because I technically haven't been confirmed as being in the program. So in the incredibly unfortunate case that I'm not accepted, I'll have to fork out a $300 cancellation fee. It explains why I bought the tickets two hours before the sale ended - after a flurry of text messaging with a friend who is a travel agent, who insisted that fares could be as low as $900. Anyway... the deed has been done. I just hope everything falls into place.

On a lighter note, I met a girl from Sophia University last week at the Japanese language practice session that just started up. She's on an exchange to Auckland Uni and returns for the same semester that I'm going there. Pretty exciting stuff.
